Yes, this crumble is super healthy! While the crumble tastes like dessert, the ingredients are super good for you.
The use of sweeteners is really low, especially compared to regular crumble recipes. It can even be made completely sugar free if you use a zero calorie sweetener such as erythritol or a natural sweetener such as xilitol.
And instead of using white flour, which has no nutritional value for your body whatsoever, we’re using healthy oats.
The butter, which is a standard ingredient for regular crumble recipes is swapped for some nutritious almond butter instead.

To make this pear + ginger breakfast crumble, you’re going to need:
- pears
- some sweetener ( I like to use xilitol, a natural and zero calorie sweetener)
- spices: cinnamon, ground ginger + fresh grated ginger
- a tiny bit of potato or corn starch to bind the fruit
- oats
- almond butter
- dessicated coconut
- slivered almonds or chopped hazelnuts
- maple syrup ( or other sweetener of choice
- a tiny bit of salt
How to make this pear + ginger breakfast crumble
This recipe is easy + quick to prepare. To make this crumble, you start of by mixing the chopped pears with the spices, the corn starch and the sweeteners. Add to a baking tin while you make the crumble topping. Mix the crumble ingredients together and sprinkle over the fruit. Bake in a preheated oven on 175 c for about 30 minutes until the fruit is cooked and the crumble is crunchy and golden brown.
Can I make this recipe for dessert?
Yes, of course you can. This recipe is good enough to even have for dessert or as a sweet snack. You could adjust the sweetness to taste and make it even sweeter if you wish. You can serve the crumble with some custard or vanilla ice cream.
Recipe suggestions
- You could swap the pears with apples
- You can use different kinds of nut butters, as long as they have a neutral taste. Swap the almond butter for cashew or sunflower seed butter for example.
- Instead of almonds on top of the crumble, you can use other nuts instead. I also love the combination of pears with hazelnuts.
- If you don’t like ginger, simply leave it out.

Ingredients
- For the pear mixture:
4 pears, peeled and cut into chunks
1 tbsp xilitol or maple syrup
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp ginger powder
1 tsp fresh grated ginger
1 tsp corn or potato starch
- For the crumble topping:
4 tbsp oatmeal
2 tsp almond butter
1 tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp dessicated coconut
1 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp salt
15 grams slivered almonds
- To serve:
Yogurt, custard or ice cream (optional)
Directions
- Preheat the oven on 175 degrees celcius.
- In a large bowl, combine the pear mixture ingredients together and divide evenly in a baking tin.
- In another bowl mix the crumble ingredients together and press with your hand into a crumble consistency.
- Sprinkle the crumble evenly onto the fruit and bake the crumble for about 30 minutes until the fruit is cooked and the crumble topping golden brown.
- Enjoy the crumble as a breakfast with a dollop of yogurt or as dessert with some custard or ice cream.
Notes
- You can swap the pears for other kinds of fruit, such as apples, if you’d like.
- Leave the ginger out, if you don’t like it.
- Use other kinds of nuts or whatever you have lying around. They’ll taste just as good on this crumble.
- Swap the almond butter for a neutral tasting nut butter of choice.
