Move over, avocado chocolate mousse! Hello, kefir chocolate mouse!
Did you know that by combining a few simple ingredients, in this case kefir (or yoghurt) with cacao powder and some sweetener, you can get a delicious chocolate mousse, that tastes almost like the real deal AND is healthy as well? I did not, but now I do know, it’s my go to dessert if i’m craving something chocolatey and want to satisfy that craving ASAP. The texture of the mousse is airy and light and the taste is really velvetty, chocolatey and decadent.
In comparison to avocado chocolate mousse, which I’ve made a fair share of, I must say, that while some were quite good and pretty ok tasting, they always had the flavor of avocado coming through. And the texture was always a little bit too heavy for my taste. This kefir chocolate mousse, humble as the ingredients for it may be, does not have an aftertaste at all and the texture is light and airy. Making it better in both texture and flavor. On top of that, it has a much lower calorie count and is not as heavy on the stomach.
In fact, kefir holds a number of health benefits, including the fact that is is a probiotic food, which helps to improve our gut microbiome, which boosts our immune system and can play a role in reducing inflammation in the body. It’s rich in protein, calcium and vitamins such as A, D and B12. Studies have shown that it may aid in blood sugar management and that it has a beneficial effect on our mood and mental health, reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression and helps improve our brain health.
Cacao is another ingredient rich in micronutrients and has many anti-oxidant properties that reduce inflammation. It’s also a mood boosting ingredient, because it contains tryptophane, serotonin and magnesium, which help fight symptoms of depression.
So combine cacao and kefir together and you have yourself a recipe that can satisfy all your chocolate dreams, lifts your mood and is beneficial to your health. That’s a win win situation!
