One of my favorite things to make in the mornings are these whole wheat raisin scones. They are so relaxing to make and eat in the weekends and on rainy days. Scones can really brighten the most dreary day!
Why these whole wheat raisin scones are healthy
I like to make these healthy whole wheat raisin scones that have been given a healthier make over. They are made with whole wheat flour, so they contain essential fibers. They don’t contain oil or butter, making them lighter but definitely not dry! These scones are crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Instead of butter, we’re adding a mix of some kefir or yogurt and unsweetened apple sauce to the dough. This is a great substitute for oil or butter.
These scones are also sugar free and are instead sweetened with just one tablespoon of xylitol. But you could also use coconut sugar or regular granular, though they won’t be sugar free anymore.
This recipe is so much healthier for you than regular scones but they still taste like an indulgent breakfast treat. But unlike other scones, these make a great start of your day, containing fiber and plenty of nutrients and they won’t leave you with the dreaded sugar rush.
Healthy toppings
To make these whole wheat raisin scones even more healthy, we’re going to serve them with some fresh full fat greek yogurt and a dollop of jam. Greek yogurt is full of protein and contains far less fat than clotted cream. It’s still creamy and delicious and goes well with these whole wheat scones. You could top them off with some of your favorite (sugar free) jam, or some fresh chopped fruit + honey.
How to make these healthy whole wheat raisin scones
These whole wheat raisin scones are super easy to make. They require only 10 minutes prep and 15 minutes of baking so they can be made in under half an hour!
Just mix all ingredients in a bowl and mix. The dough is a little sticky and still wet and that’s normal. Use some flour to handle the dough and shape them into small golf sized balls. Lay them on a baking tray with parchment. Brush them with a little egg wash for a pretty shiny look or use some plant based milk. Bake them at 180 c for about 15 minutes or more and serve them warm with your desired toppings.

minutesThese scones are healthy and light but still feel like an indulgent breakfast treat. They are made with whole wheat flour, are sugar free and contain no oil or butter. They are great served with greek yogurt + jam or fresh fruit + honey on top.
Ingredients
75 grams of whole-wheat flour + extra for dusting
75 grams of white whole-wheat flour, brown rice flour or oat flour
1 tbsp xilitol ( or coconut sugar/regular sugar)
3 tbsp greek yogurt ( or regular yogurt/kefir/coconut milk)
3 tbsp apple sauce
2 tbsp raisins, chopped ( or other dried fruit of choice)
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt
egg wash or plantbased milk to brush the scones
- To serve:
Full fat greek yogurt ( 10% fat)
fruit jam of choice ( sugar free) or fresh fruit + honey
Directions
- Preheat the oven on 180 c. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Mix all scone ingredients in a bowl and mix together to form a sticky batter-like dough. Don’t overmix.
- Shape the dough into 10 small or 5 larger rounds. Lay them on the baking sheet and flatten them a little using your hands.
- Brush the scones with egg wash or plant based milk and bake for 15 minutes or more until golden brown and done.
- Leave to cool a little.
- Serve with a dollop of greek yogurt + jam or serve them with fresh, chopped fruit and honey.
Notes
- I love to add raisins to the scones to sweeten them naturally. I’ve chopped the raisins to make them spread more evenly through the dough. You could also use other dried fruits, such as dried figs, mulberries, prunes, dates or apricots. Don’t like dried fruit? Just leave them out
- You can make about 10 smaller sized scones with this recipe or make 5 larger ones. If you make larger scones, the baking time may be a bit longer. Check to see if the scones are done. They should have risen and have a golden brown exterior.
- These scones can me made vegan by swapping the greek yogurt/kefir in the scones for coconut milk and brushing the scones with plant based milk. Replace the greek yogurt topping with some coconut whipped cream.
